Somewhere between bare steel and white paint, we lost our minds. This is our 10″, 1/2″-thick AR500 gong — mirror-polished by hand, then coated in real titanium nitride. The gold-Deagle finish, on eleven pounds of American steel.
Is it necessary? Absolutely not. Our Surface Rust line rings exactly the same for $41. Every bullet strike reveals the ordinary steel beneath — which is deep, if you think about it.
- Mill-certified 1/2″ AR500, 10″ round, ~11 lb
- Hand-polished, gold-coated, then laser-engraved in black with your name or phrase (up to 20 characters)
- Real TiN (titanium nitride) PVD coating — the actual gold-tone coating used on drill bits and fancy pistols
- Ships with a Certificate of Inauthenticity
- Made to order — allow 6–8 weeks. Photos of production units coming after the first coating run.
The first shot ruins it. That's the point.
Safety first: Steel targets are for use by adults who accept the risks of shooting steel. Minimum distances: 10 yards pistol, 100 yards rifle. No steel-core, armor-piercing, or bi-metal ammunition; keep impact velocity under 2,800 fps. Always wear eye and ear protection. Angle targets 15–20° downward. Inspect before every use; retire cratered plates. Sold with assumption of risk — see our Safety page and Terms.
Questions & answers
What size is it, and how much does it weigh?
10″ round, with hanger ears, about 11.3 lb, in 1/2″ mill-certified AR500 steel.
How far away should I stand when shooting it?
With standard lead-core ammo on undamaged 1/2″ AR500: at least 10 yards for standard pistol (9mm, .40, .45), 15 yards for magnum pistol and pistol-caliber carbines, 25 yards for .22 LR rimfire and birdshot, and 100 yards for centerfire rifle (5.56, .308, etc.) and shotgun slugs. Increase distance for magnum calibers and when the plate shows wear.
Can I shoot rifles at it?
Yes. 1/2″ AR500 is built for centerfire rifle such as 5.56/.223 and .308 at 100 yards or more, and it handles magnum pistol at safe distance. It is not rated for .50 BMG, .416 Barrett or .408 CheyTac; those need our 3/4″ Big Bore Series. Keep impact velocity under 2,800 fps.
What ammo should I never shoot at it?
Never steel-core, armor-piercing, bi-metal jacket, incendiary or green-tip (M855/SS109) ammunition. These damage the plate and can ricochet whole instead of breaking up. Run a magnet over surplus ammo first: anything magnetic stays off steel.
How do I hang it?
Mounting holes: 3 × 9/16″ square (1 in each ear, 1 center). Hanging hardware isn't included: pair it with our T-post hanger, which comes with a 3-link Grade 70 chain and a Grade 8 bolt kit, on a standard farm-store T-post. Hang it so it swings freely with a slight downward lean toward the shooter, which sends spatter into the dirt.
Is it really meant to be shot?
Yes. It's the same mill-certified 1/2″ AR500 and shoots exactly like the Surface Rust version, just mirror-polished by hand, coated in real titanium nitride (TiN) and laser-engraved in black with your name or phrase (up to 20 characters). Every hit reveals the steel beneath. The first shot ruins it; that's the point.
When should I retire it?
Inspect it before every session. Retire any plate with craters, pitting or deep gouges, or one that has been hit with the wrong ammo even once: damaged steel deflects unpredictably.
Does it ship free?
Yes. Orders of $99 or more ship free in the lower 48 states, and this one qualifies on its own. To Alaska, Hawaii and U.S. territories most $99+ orders still ship free, but pieces too large for a standard mailing box travel as heavy ground freight; your cart shows whether your order qualifies before you check out.
Can I return it?
Unused, unfired targets can be returned within 30 days of delivery for a refund of the purchase price; you pay return shipping. Targets that have been shot can't be returned. If your order arrives damaged, email photos within 48 hours of delivery and we'll replace or refund it.
