Why 1/2″ AR500

Wyatt Targets — tough AR500 steel targets built for shooters

A Third More Steel. A Lot More Life.

Most steel targets sold online are 3/8″ AR500 — fine for a season or two of pistol work. Every Wyatt target is made from genuine 1/2″ AR500, the same abrasion-resistant plate used in mining equipment and armor applications.

What the extra 1/8″ (a third more steel) buys you

  • Longer service life. Thicker plate spreads impact energy across more mass, so it resists the pitting and cratering that eventually kill thinner targets — especially under rifle fire.
  • A louder, cleaner ring. More mass means a deep ring that carries, so you hear the hit from way out. Instant feedback, no walking downrange.
  • Magnum-friendly. Heavy pistol calibers that stress 3/8″ plate are business as usual for 1/2″.

How we make them

Every target starts as mill-certified AR500 plate. Each one is deburred by hand and finished in an American fab shop — painted, or left in the mill’s factory red-oxide primer for our Surface Rust line — so it’s ready to hang out of the box.

The full lineup, drawn to spec

Every Wyatt target starts as an engineering drawing. Here’s the whole standard 1/2″ AR500 line on one sheet — IPSC silhouettes (100%, 66%, 33%), square and rectangle plates, 4″ to 12″ gongs, and our T-post hanger — with dimensions, weights, and the typical 9/16″ square mounting-hole detail.
